All Souls Day

Sunday, Nov. 2

During his homily Fr. Jovi asked the congregation if people still followed the custom of going house to house on the eve of All Saints and All Souls.  Then he began to sing.

"Kaluluwa'y dumaratal
Sa tapat ng durungawan
Campanilya'y tumatang tang
Ginigising ang may bahay
Kung kami po'y lilimusan
Dali dali po ninyo'ng bigyan
Baka kami'y mapag sirhan
ng pinto sa kalangitan.
Kami po ay nanganga luluwa."

Souls come and stand in front of windows

Bells ring, waking those inside the house.
If you will give us alms hurry please
Before the doors of heaven close.

Sadly the congregation said no.

My cousin Ellen said that some people spend the night of All Saints at the cemetery. Others just return for the feast of All Souls.

Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed by the mercy of God rest in peace.  Amen.
