Dr. Jose Rizal is the National Hero of the Philippines.  He came from an affluent family and therefore was well educated.  He became an optometrist because his mom suffered from eye disease and he wanted to help her.

From Rizal's growing up years he felt the continued oppression of the Spanish who ruled all aspects of life: government and religion.  He wrote several books, including children's books encouraging Pilipinos to see the value of being Pilipino, not just slaves to Spanish whims.

Toward the end of Rizal's life, the government accused him of treason.  He was imprisoned and was executed by firing squad on Dec. 30, 1898.

  1. Wow! It looks like your country honors Rizal well. Is that one huge green vase covered with live plants?
